Description: Victorian Greeting Card - "HAPPY NEW YEAR" - Compliments of Willie Staver, Carrier Boy

Here's an unusual New Year's card from a paper boy named Willie Staver, who seemed to be both soliciting the patrons on his route for a 25ยข tip, and thanking them for their "unexpected" generosity. The verse reads:

Here comes our Daily Carrier;
He's a faithful little man;
'Twould be hard to do without him--
Don't believe we ever can.
He's calling on his patrons
This blessed New Year's Day--
Don't believe without a quarter
I've the heart to send him away.

Thank you! I did not expect so much!
And now, "A Happy New Year",
May joy and gladness be your lot,
Mingled with never a tear,
You've "cast your bread on the water"
This precious New Year's Day,
And it will return to you
Is what the preachers say.

The back is blank.

Size: approx. 3.125" x 5"

Date: 1887

Lithographer: Not identified.

Condition: Very good, I'd say. This card is lightly soiled with slightly worn edges and corners. The upper right corner is creased. (Please see scans.)
