SERIES: Satire

This is one of 100 cards featuring humorous cartoons and advertising the "Ariosa" brand of coffee that Arbuckles' issued in the late 1880s. All the illustrations were originally published in either Puck, Judge, or Texas Siftings, three of the more popular satirical periodicals of the day. Most typically aimed their derision at blacks, Jews, country "rubes", or the Irish, but in this case it's just the wonders of feminine logic. This particular card was based on an 1888 Texas Siftings cartoon drawn by T. Ramsden and features a proper young Victorian lady who's subtly attempting to get her boyfriend to move their relationship to the next level (which is about four inches lower than the current level).

The back shows the Arbuckles' factory buildings, dock, railroad cars, and a ship.

SIZE: 5" x 3"

DATE: Undated (but probably 1888 or 1889)

LITHOGRAPHER: Not identified

CONDITION: Very good+, I'd say. The front of this card is only very lightly soiled, while the back is somewhat unevenly toned and has some faint pinkish staining. The edges and corners are only slightly worn. (Please see scans.)

MULTIPLE ITEM SHIPPING DISCOUNT: I will ship up to 4 cards for the single base shipping charge shown. For purchases of more than 4 cards, the shipping charge will increase by just a small increment for every 4 additional cards.

HEROIC MEASURES

GEORGE (to best girl)--"I see that you are wearing a bang,
my dear Clara."

CLARA--"Yes, George, and I don't think it is very becoming
to me."

GEORGE--"Then why do you wear it, darling?"

CLARA (shyly)--"Because I am tired of being kissed on the
forehead, George."

From Texas Siftings, by permission.
